アルフレッド・ラッセル・ウォレス は、イギリスの博物学者、生物学者、探検家、人類学者、地理学者。「ウォレス」は、「ウォーレス」とも表記する。アマゾン川とマレー諸島を広範囲に実地探査して、インドネシアの動物の分布を二つの異なった地域に分ける分布境界線、ウォレス線を特定した。そのため時に生物地理学の父と呼ばれることもある。チャールズ・ダーウィンとは別に自身の自然選択を発見し、ダーウィンの理論の公表を促した。また自然選択説の共同発見者であると同時に、進化理論の発展のためにいくつか貢献をした19世紀の主要な進化理論家の一人である。その中には自然選択が種分化をどのように促すかというウォレス効果と、警告色の概念が含まれる。
